Storytents

Loop pedals are ultimately pretty fun, and since working with them for Surreal Solihull, I wanted to see how to structure multiple loops into a larger pieces. And then, a chance came up with RicNic, a youth arts organisation, to soundtrack their storytelling workshop StoryTents.

The workshop guides children (aged 3-7) on storytelling before giving them the tools (including puppets!) they need to tell and make up their own stories, coming and going in the various Story Tents as they please to tell the stories they desire. It was really important to me that nothing was too prescriptive, but that clear changes would come that the children could notice and interpret as they wished.

To record, I spent a day in a very messy room, with all the percussion instruments I could think of and need, and recorded and mixed the soundtrack, spanning ukulele, household objects, trumpet and xylophone into one 25 minute journey. You can hear it here – but if you’d like to hear it in person then do check out RicNic and some of their upcoming workshops and groups!
