The Same Boat: Process

‘The Same Boat: Process’ was written in 2020, a part of the ‘Miniatures in Isolation’ Series, for the University of Birmingham’s Virtual Summer Festival of Music. It is written for Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium and Double Bass, but I am happy to rearrange if commisioned.

I tried to highlight the differences in something seemingly united, showing how kaleidoscopic the country’s experiences have been. We are not in the same boat. If we want to get through hardship, it will require compassion and awareness of other people’s existences, and my native Britain is one of the most unequal countries in the world.

Given the subject matter, I didn’t think it would be appropriate to sell this work – so anyone is welcome to perform this, or its companion piece ‘you can meander on your own terms’, but I would ask that you let me know, and credit me in any performance.

A huge thank you to all musicians involved – you can see ‘The Same Boat: Process’ and its introduction at 9:35.
All the pieces are startling and exciting, so do give all a listen!
